The company's history goes back to January
1975, the year in which Master was founded, in its first headquarters on via
Pacinotti in Sampierdarena, occupying about 400 m2 on three floors.
The founding partner was
Bernardo Castellaro, a Genoese who, since boyhood in the 60s, had obtained
basic experience in the factory in Pegli, in the field of marine instrumentation
(construction of pressure gauges, thermometers, thermocouples, etc.).
Right from the start, Master's
target sector was extensive: general marine instrumentation for all types of
watercraft, which developed into its primary sector until 1984 thanks to the untiring
efforts of Castellaro, who gathered knowledge and experience, and forged
relationships with marine yards and port facilities throughout Italy.
During that latter period, as
a consequence of a general recession in maritime traffic with serious declines
in the marine construction industry, Master turned progressively to new
industrial applications in diverse productive sectors.
The experience obtained in
the marine sector where the quality of products had already been a strength, become
important and commercial organization
based on discriminating service (the main features being: presence, quality and
scheduling) was met with positive acclaim among the new industrial customers.
In the course of a few
years, Master continued to reaffirm itself with increasingly satisfactory
results in the industrial panorama of the Northwest and launched the first
collaborative efforts with enterprises in South Italy.
Its principal customers in
the industrial sector included ANSALDO, ITALIMPIANTI, ABB offering the
opportunity to meet the challenges in important projects in which from time to
time cutting-edge technological solutions were acquired and implemented.
Since 1986 Master has
specialized in the more specific sector of thermocouples and thermoresistors (abandoning
other instrumentation) and thus becoming a national leader in instruments for
temperature measurement.
A high technical level is
achieved through the training of a highly qualified staff, through a meticulous
research and experimentation activity as well as the ongoing participation in
study courses and continuing education relating to the technology of the
sector.
With this focus on research
and development, several collaborative university projects with the Istituto
Macchine of the College of Engineering, Genoa (Prof. Pittaluga, Prof. Acton and
Prof. Trucco) were begun. Projects
relating to miniaturization of the thermoelements were developed and completed,
in order to meet the requirements of an industrial market which demands
components of ever-decreasing size.
Recently, Master has distinguished
itself from its competitors by offering solutions and products tailor-made to
the specific requirements of the customer.
In 1988 an important
collaboration was started with Piaggio Aeroindustries that resulted in a
project relating to a new type of sensor for determining the temperature of a
wing section for aeronautical models in design at the time.
These sensors were approved
by the US aeronautical register and even today continue to be serially
manufactured at the current Master division of Westeam.
Also in 1988 the company's
headquarters were transferred to via Muratori in order to alleviate the space
requirements resulting from the increase in business.
Since then, Master's
activities have been the subject of constant investment mainly in perfecting
production technology and the laboratory facilities used for the various product
quality test inspections.
In 1996 the enterprise received its first ISO 9000 certification.
In 2000, following personal problems of the owner,
the company was purchased by an industrial group that operated it until 2006,
when Westeam, a long-time customer of Master, acquired the entire business,
launching a new investment cycle, in order to revive the brand and to meet the
challenges of the international market. Today
Westeam is setting a new course making the Master brand available to new
customers world wide trough his network of
agents and distributors.
